“Marvel’s Iron Fist” premiered on March 17, 2017 to a resoundingly low aggregate score of 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was reviewed by 36 major critics, with only six considering the show “certified fresh.”
Despite production value, the show has been under constant scrutiny due to the lead character Danny Rand being cast as a white person. Danny Rand’s character is white, but many people see this as a missed opportunity for Marvel Studios to take charge and add more diversity to their heroes.
Marvel Studios have also been accused of “whitewashing” their characters as well, most notoriously the Ancient One in the 2016 film, “Doctor Strange.” Travis Andrews, in his article, discusses actor George Takei’s issue with Tilda Swinton being cast as The Ancient One, who in the comics, is of Tibetan origin.
Travis Williams, Media Producer for WHLT TV, stated in a discussion with Cut Scene that he believes that the “underrepresentation of minorities is totally, a very valid concern.” He goes on to say that he “understands the desire to make a character that represents that side of things.”
